Obyan Beach Reef Flat- Benthic
&
Macroinvertebrate Results
The
Obyan Beach reef flat is located in the South Coast of
Saipan, CNMI. Several beaches made up of coarse sand and gravel give
the reef flat a total area of about 3,300 feet with a vairable width of
up to 150 feet. The strong currents at Obyan can make swimming quite
dangerous a times.
The main access road is crushed coral gravel and subject to serious
erosion during rainy seasons. CRM and DEQ are actively seeking to
mitigate the effects of this pollution source. Parking lot
relocation and paving as well as revegetation where the main road led
to the beach appears to be having a positive effect in reducing near
shore turbidity and increasing coral cover.
